Warm fingers drifted over his arms tracing random swirling patterns. The touch was comforting and oddly enough nothing that he felt to be sexual even though he was tangled together nude with his mate. Over the past few months he had found an increasing need for physical contact from the pack in any manner. It was a form of communication that he had never quite understood until now.
"You seem to have a burning question," Woohyun noted softly.
Sungkyu felt himself blushing and he turned his face into his mate’s warm chest."I was just wondering," he mumbled, "how you managed to not be touching me all the time when I was human."
Woohyun laugh was warm."Why do you think I used the bathroom all the time? It was hard to keep my hands off you."
"You have more self control then me," Sungkyu admitted think of how hard it was to resist his mate when he desired him.
"No," Woohyun replied grinning, "I just have more practice. It took me a long time and several long conversations with my Beast before I could even trust myself kissing you.”
“Really?” Sungkyu asked surprised. “You always seemed so shy and hesitant.”
“Only because I was certain you wouldn’t appreciate me jumping on you and shredding your clothing,” Woohyun chuckled. “You should have seen my room after we slept together the first time. I broke the headboard in an effort to control myself.”
Sungkyu released a full throated laugh at that. “Is that why you shooed me out of your room so fast? I thought that was weird.”
“Yes,” Woohyun admitted sheepishly.
“Well at least I didn’t wake up covered in feathers,” Sungkyu added with a grin that caused Woohyun to roll his eyes.
“Don’t worry,” Woohyun said after a moment. “You will get it eventually. Until then no one really cares if we jump each other all the time. Tablo has extra bedrooms at his house for a reason and what we do in our apartment is our business.”
Sungkyu found his cheeks coloring again. “My
Beast is only ever calm after we have been together,” he admitted.
“Mine too,” Woohyun told him. “They are mated and they sooth each other.”
“Was it this way before I was a werewolf?” Sungkyu asked curious.
“Somewhat, but my Beast spent most of the time worried that we would lose you. Humans are,” he paused as if searching for the right word, “fragile and he didn’t like that.”
“Hm,” Sungkyu hummed, tracing his fingers over the smooth ridges of muscle in his lover’s stomach. “I think I can understand how he feels. Sorry I made you wait so long before I chose this.”
“All that matters is that you did,” Woohyun reassured him.
“Why do you think Tablo’s mate is still human?” he asked thoughtfully. If it had been so hard for Woohyun to have a human he felt mated to, it must be even harder for the Alpha who was more dominate and instinctively more protective by far to have a human to call his own.
“Tablo hasn’t said, and really it isn’t any of our business, but we think it has to do with the want of children,” Woohyun replied.
“Children?” Sungkyu asked, lifting himself and shifting so he could look at Woohyun’s face.
“Yes werewolves cannot bear children.”
That was something he hadn’t heard. “We are infertile?” he asked, not liking the implications of that.
Woohyun laughed. “No. In fact some of us are very fertile however a female werewolf is incapable of carrying a child to term. You know how pregnant humans have to be careful to protect their stomach where the baby is cradled?” Woohyun asked.
“Yes,” Sungkyu nodded. “I have heard that some women have lost a child by getting in a car accident or falling down the stairs. Something that causes trauma like that.”
“It is the same for a werewolf womb, yet the trauma that occurs is nothing we can protect the fetus from. A female werewolf must change at the full moon. She can’t resist it anymore than we can and although she still has a womb inside her, it shifts and changes as well. It is too violent on a fetus and they are aborted. Some women can carry for a few months before that happens, but it always happens eventually. Jia has lost four children that way.”
“That is horrible,” Sungkyu whispered, the tragedy of that settling on him. “So Tablo’s mate is human because he wants children?”
“We think so yes,” Woohyun nodded. “It is still hard with a human woman since the miscarriage rate for a mixed couple is higher. We think that any babies that might come out as werewolves just don’t survive because the human body knows they could do damage to the mother. Tablo’s mate carried a child for five months last year before she abruptly miscarried. No one knows what happened, but it hurt our Alpha.”
“Is that why they light a candle every full moon?” Sungkyu asked.
“Some of us think so. She started it when she was pregnant and she has never stopped. Dongwoo thinks that she lights the candle to let Tablo know that he protects the werewolf half of the family and she will protect the human half for that night, but Dongwoo is a hopeless romantic so who really knows,” Woohyun told him.
“And she is pregnant now,” Sungkyu commented lightly.
Woohyun studied him for a minute. “How do you know that?”
“She,” Sungkyu thought of how to phrase something he had just known. “She smells different the most human females, I guess. There is something extra, and I feel like I need to protect her. I don’t know how to describe it.”
“Good,” Woohyun murmured. “You are a rather dominate wolf so it is understandable that you would feel the need to protect those that need it and a pregnant woman would draw those instincts out even further.”
“So she is pregnant?” he asked.
“Yes, for about a month. Even though we all know it Tablo hasn’t told anyone yet so don’t bring it up in front of him unless you have a death wish,” Woohyun cautioned.
Sungkyu shook his head sharply. “I know better. Do you think he will change her after she has his child?”
“I don’t know,” Woohyun’s voice softened. “There are risks with trying to change someone. You have to hurt them to the point of death so that the werewolf genes are capable of taking over. If you don’t go far enough then they live as human’s in horrible pain as they heal slowly, or if you too far they die before they can become werewolves at all. Females have a harder time of it then males; it is like something in them resists the change to the very end. That is why there are only a few females in every pack.”
Sungkyu couldn’t help shifting closer until he was nearly on top of his mate. “Were you scared when you changed me?”
“Terrified,” Woohyun admitted, pulling him impossibly closer. “If I had lost you I probably would have gone for a swim since I would have been responsible for killing you.”
“A swim?” Sungkyu asked, wondering at the strangeness of the activity choice.
Woohyun laughed, shifting and tugging until Sungkyu was lying on top of him. “We cannot swim love,” he said gently. “We are too dense now and even the best swimmers of us sink straight to the bottom. It is the easiest way for a werewolf to commit suicide and one of the only ways that is guaranteed to work.”
“Woohyun!” Sungkyu exclaimed sharply. “You wouldn’t have.”
“I would have,” he replied firmly, his hands roaming over his lovers back. “I wouldn’t have been able to deal with the fact that I had killed you.”
“But you didn’t,” Sungkyu said firmly, “and you are never going swimming no matter what happens to me.”
“Yes master,” Woohyun said with a chuckle. The other wolf tipped his head back, baring his throat in submission and causing a curl of desire to thread through Sungkyu’s body.
“Good,” he murmured, lips fixing themselves upon the offering. “Because if you ever did that, I would come back from the dead and kill you.”
“You are strange,” Woohyun said with a laugh.
“I blame you for most of it,” Sungkyu countered.
“I’ll take the blame,” Woohyun replied with a wicked smile. “I don’t mind taking the blame for that.” His hands slid lower on his lover, looking for a good hand hold to press the other man closer.
“Good,” Sungkyu said firmly with a short nod. “Now shut up so I can love you properly.” Any response that Woohyun might have offered was cut off by the press of Sungkyu’s mouth over his, forcing the arguments out of his head all together.
